Why a blog...

I decided to create this site for my colleagues, friends, and family members that travel to Hilton Head Island, SC. I found that I was sending enormous emails every time I found someone headed to the island. The posts and links are to some of my favorites on the island or within an hour or so of the island. Plus, we are doing this really cool program at work (The Columbus Metropolitan Library) called Learn & Play @ CML. Enjoy!

HHI Here We Come!

I am so excited, I just booked J. and I's flight to HHI. I found a great price on airfare via Delta right onto the island (Note: Only 2 airlines fly onto the island, Delta and USAirways). Total travel time.... 4 hrs 15 minutes, including the layover in Atlanta. One great thing about HHI airport is it is so small. Literally, we will get off the plane, grab our bags, go out the door, and get into my brother's car. He won't even have to turn off the car. It's super easy. So rather than driving and losing 24 hrs or so in travel time, we only lose about 12 hrs.

Thank you Dewitt for approving my PTO! I will be taking the camera and laptop and blogging "live" the entire time I am there. So, it's really more like a Learn & Play field trip, right?

I love to fly and it shows.

Airfare to HHI

Ok, have to vent. I am trying to get to HHI in September so my son can see the turtle hatchlings. He wants to touch one. Soooo.... trying to find airfare to get us to the island as there is NO WAY I am driving myself and a 5 year old 10-12 hrs by myself. Of course, I can't find airfare for less than my mortgage and it's driving me nuts. September starts hurricane season, one would think I could find a deal. If anyone out there sees a deal, please post. Willing to fly into Columbia, SC, Savannah, GA, Charleston, SC, Jacksonville, FL, or even Hilton Head. (Yes, HHI has an airport. It's great if you don't mind flying in a 25 seater.)

Turtles

My brother and sister-in-law work with conserving the sea turtles that call Hilton Head Island (HHI) home. The last time I visited HHI I was able to go on Turtle Patrol. Which is basically looking to see if a turtle nested on the beach the previous evening and marking the nests so the public (aka us stupid tourists because HHI residents know all about the turtles) leaves them alone. If you want to learn more about the HHI Turtles check out Coastal Discovery page. Also, a tidbit I learned... if on the beach at night and want to take a flash light, color the lense with a red sharpie. Red light is the least harmful to any sea/beach life you may come across. (My dad took the picture of the turtle. She had just nested on HHI in May 2008.)
